Biography

Opera News aptly praised Courtney Miller’s “fluent musicality,” for her portrayal of Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Saratoga.  Known for her “captivating stage presence” and “excellent sense of comic timing,” Courtney is a versatile performer: from operatic classics to contemporary premieres to solo recital work.  In the 2024-25 season, she returned to San Francisco Opera as Warren's Wife in The Handmaid’s Tale, following her 2022 debut with the company as Sister St. Charles in Dialogues des Carmélites.  Also last season, she made her role and company debuts with Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera as Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, with the San Francisco Choral Society as the Alto Soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, with the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus as the Alto Soloist in Ratcliff’s Ode to Common Things, with West Bay Opera as Teresa in La sonnambula.  She sang the alto solos in the world premier of Fred Cohen’s Nizkor - A Journey of Remembrance with San Jose State University, and returned to Pocket Opera as Elmire in Tartuffe

In 2025-26, Courtney returns to the Opera San José mainstage and to Festival Opera for Flora in La traviata.  She revives her one-woman show Tell me the truth about love with collaborator Kevin Korth, debuts her second original work, and debuts with Livermore Valley Opera as Despina in Così fan tutte.  

An award-winning recitalist and concert soloist, Courtney is known for curating programs that tell compelling stories, highlighting works by female composers.  The Chautauquan Daily described her performances as “possessing a delicacy and diction very appealing, and the strength to bring it home,” following her interpretation of Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra.

A passionate advocate for new music, Courtney has created several roles, including Mina Miller Edison in TESLA (Kievman/Babe), and portrayed characters like Sister Helen in Dead Man Walking (Heggie/McNally), and The Wind in The Witches of Venice (Glass/Montresor).  She has workshopped pieces with American Lyric Theater, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Opera San José, and Boston Art Song Society.  

Additional opera highlights include Berta in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera San José,  Olga in Eugene Onegin and Mercédès in Carmen with Florida Grand Opera; Hannah in The Passenger with Detroit Opera; Meg in Little Women with Madison Opera; Mrs. Ford in Sir John in Love with Odyssey Opera; and performing the title role in Carmen aboard Azamara Club Cruises.  

Courtney is the recipient of numerous honors, including Grand Prize in the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Young Artist Competition (Women’s Voice), First Place in the American Prize in Art Song  (Women’s Voice); and was a New England Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Additional awards include Second Place in the Lois Alba Aria Competition and winner of the Concorso Lirico Internazionale “Anita Cerquetti” in Montecosaro, Italy.

Courtney holds a Master of Music from the Boston Conservatory, where she appeared as Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, The Witch in Hansel and Gretel, Concepción in L’heure espagnole, and L’enfant in L’enfant et les sortilège.  She earned her Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan, where she sang Nancy in Albert Herring.


As a Teaching Artist with the San Francisco Opera Guild, Courtney is a dedicated educator and mentor.  She currently studies with Dr. Julia Nielsen.   Outside of music, she enjoys hiking, gardening, and walking dogs around the Bay Area.
